So you’ve decided you going to start a scrapbook, but you have no cooking clue where to start!

Everyone starts a scrapbook for the same reason, to document treasured memories. Whether it’s a special holiday or event, to give to someone as a gift, to document family memories or simply as a hobby to pass the time

Remember that a scrapbook can include more than just photos and writing (or journaling) about those photos, it can include letters, holiday brochures, ticket stubs, anything that is of particular value to you.
So what are you waiting for…. Lets get started!

There area some basic items to will need to start capturing your memories in a scrapbook. Everyone has their own preference, but for me these are the basics that I couldn’t live without.

  • Photos (of course)
  • Scrapbook album (Rinbound or postbound)
  • Patterned Paper
  • Cardstock
  • Small cutting knife
  • Steel Ruler
  • Adhesives (glue & double sided tape)
  • Scissors

PHOTOS
People tend to choose photos that go together in a theme, of a special event, or holiday, or you could group a collection of photos with a specific theme but taken at a different time for eg. School sports match photos.

SCRAPBOOK ALBUM
You get various size albums, 12 x 12” is the standard and post popular size in South Africa, however you can find smaller albums which are ideal for specific holiday or gift albums.
You get postbound albums and ringbound albums, covers from synthetic, leather and cloth covers, you would choose one that fits your budget and need

PAPER & CARDSTOCK
You would normally choose your paper and cardstock to compliment your photos and the design and pattern would be specific to the type of layout you are creating.

ADHESIVES
Craft glue and double sided tape is a must have to put your page together, be sure to buy a good quality like Tombo so that you know your page will last over time, the last thing you want is to spend time putting your layouts together and then have them fall apart.

SCISSORS
I would recommend having 2 pairs of scissors, one pair that you use exclusively for cutting your double sided tape as over time the blades get sticky (however that is easily resolved with wiping down with a solvent)
A small pair of sharp scissors to help you cut around patterned shapes on your paper that you can use to embellish your page, more commonly referred to as ‘fussy cutting’

Now that you understand all the items you will be needing, it’s time to put it all together to form your first scrapbook page!
